Google Ads Updates: Everything Advertisers Need to Know (Updated Regularly)

Google Ads Updates Tracker · 2026–2027

Last updated: · Updated as Google announces changes

Google Ads is changing faster in 2026 than at any point since Performance Max launched. Legacy Search features are being folded into AI Max, Smart Bidding now behaves differently for budget-limited campaigns, Display is moving into Demand Gen and ads have arrived inside AI Mode. This page tracks every Google Ads update that affects your campaigns, what it means in practice and what to do next.

Short answer: The biggest Google Ads updates in 2026 are the September auto-upgrade of legacy Search features to AI Max, the 17 August bidding change for budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns, the removal of campaign-level language targeting from Search, the migration of Display campaigns into Demand Gen, and new ad formats inside Google’s AI Mode. Most of these changes happen automatically, so the advertisers who act early keep control of performance.

AI Max for Search: what the September 2026 auto-upgrade means

AI Max for Search is now the centre of Google’s Search product. It is an AI layer added to a standard Search campaign that brings broad match, keywordless matching, text customisation and final URL expansion, while you keep keyword-level control. It is a setting on your existing campaign, not a new campaign type.

The deadline that matters right now: between 1 and 30 September 2026, Google automatically upgrades Search campaigns using the campaign-level broad match setting or Automatically Created Assets to AI Max. Since 3 August 2026 you can no longer create new campaigns with either legacy feature.

Dynamic Search Ads have more time. The full DSA sunset was pushed back to February 2027. When they upgrade, dynamic ad groups become standard ad groups with search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion switched on, and your legacy URL controls carry over.

What to do

Don’t wait for the automatic switch. Google’s manual upgrade tool keeps your historical settings and data, and one-click experiments let you test AI Max against your current setup before you commit. Tell your reporting team too: with final URL expansion, the page someone landed on may not match the final URL stored on the ad, so any report joined on that URL can break quietly.

Why did my Google Ads CPA go up? The 17 August bidding change

This is the Google Ads update most likely to have moved your results without warning. On 15 June 2026, Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin announced three bidding and budgeting changes. The headline one affects campaigns marked “Limited by budget” that use Target CPA or Target ROAS.

Google’s own example explains it. If your Target CPA is $10 but the campaign has recently been achieving $5, it will now deliver closer to $10. To keep your recent performance, you lower the target to $5. The change covers Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Travel campaigns, and the global rollout finished on 27 August 2026. Google does not adjust your targets or budgets for you.

Filter your campaigns by “Limited by budget” status and compare actual CPA or ROAS over the last 90 days with the targets you’ve set. Wherever they’ve drifted apart, reset the target to the number you actually want to pay.

Smart Bidding Exploration and Promotion Mode

The same June announcement brought two growth features. Smart Bidding Exploration is now available globally for Performance Max campaigns without a product feed, and in beta for Performance Max with a feed and for Shopping campaigns. It lets you set a ROAS tolerance so Google’s AI can chase conversions from searches you wouldn’t normally bid on. Google reports an average 18% rise in unique converting query categories and a 19% rise in conversions.

Promotion Mode entered beta for Search and Performance Max. It lets you schedule a temporary loosening of ROAS tolerance plus extra daily budget for a defined peak window. Use it for Black Friday, Boxing Day and January sales instead of permanently changing your targets.

Google Ads language targeting is being removed from Search

A quieter change lands this month. From late September 2026, the campaign-level language setting is removed for Search and AI Max for Search campaigns, and Search ads match on the language of your ads instead. Performance Max works differently depending on the channel:

Campaign / channelDoes the language setting still apply?
Search campaignsNo. Matching uses the language of your ads.
AI Max for SearchNo. Matching uses the language of your ads.
Performance Max on Google SearchNo. Works the same way as Search campaigns.
Performance Max on YouTube, Display, Discover, GmailYes. The campaign setting still guides who sees your ads.

What to do: Make sure every ad and landing page is clearly written in the language of the audience you want, because those signals, together with the user’s language preferences, now drive matching. This matters most for multilingual markets such as Wales, Canada, Belgium and the Gulf.

Display campaigns are moving into Demand Gen

Standalone Display campaigns are being retired. The Google Display Network isn’t going anywhere, but from 2026 you buy it through Demand Gen, alongside YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Google says advertisers adding GDN inside Demand Gen see an average 9.5% increase in ROI.

The switch happens in three stages. A migration tool started rolling out in June 2026. Later, new Display campaigns can only be created in Demand Gen, and any remaining campaigns will be migrated automatically. WordStream reports that standalone creation ends in January 2027, but Google hasn’t published one global date, so watch your account notifications.

Use the migration tool, don’t wait for the automatic move

The tool carries over up to 42 days of performance history, cutting learning time to roughly one or two days. Migration is one-way, the Display Network is opted in by default, and you need to move content suitability exclusions to account level before you start.

Google Marketing Live 2026: ads in AI Mode and Ask Advisor

At Google Marketing Live 2026 on 20 May, Google announced a new generation of ad formats for AI-powered Search, a cross-product AI agent and Gemini-powered creative tools.

Ads in AI Mode

Google says AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly users, and its new ad placements read like a native conversational answer carrying a “Sponsored” label. The formats include Conversational Discovery Ads inside AI Mode answers, Highlighted Answers in AI-generated recommendation lists, and Business Agent for Leads, which puts a Gemini chatbot inside the ad unit. Placements are expanding region by region, with Business Agent for Leads still in pilot.

Ask Advisor

Ask Advisor is a single Gemini-powered agent across Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center and Google Marketing Platform. It remembers context across sessions and can launch campaigns, generate assets and flag optimisation opportunities. It launched in beta for English-language accounts.

What to do: Visibility in AI Mode depends on the same signals as AI Max: clear landing pages, rich assets and clean product feeds. Ecommerce brands should keep promotions up to date in Merchant Center. If you’re also testing conversational ads outside Google, our ChatGPT Ads guide covers that channel.

  • Faster ad approvals. Real-Time Policy Reviews give instant feedback on Responsive Search Ads, cutting review times from hours to seconds.
  • Performance Max transparency. The channel performance timeline shows how Search, Display, YouTube, Discover and Maps each contributed, and asset experiments let you test creative properly.
  • Campaign total budgets. Now available for Search, Performance Max and Shopping in open beta, useful for fixed-length promotions.
  • Local campaigns. A self-upgrade tool rolled out through August and September; Google advises upgrading before the holiday season.
  • Terms of Service. Updated Google Ads Terms took effect on 1 July 2026.

What Google Ads updates are coming in 2027?

The direction is clear: Google is folding manual, legacy features into AI-driven campaign types. The confirmed 2027 milestones are the Dynamic Search Ads sunset from February and the final stages of the Display-to-Demand Gen migration. Expect AI Mode ad formats to reach more countries and languages through the year. We add every confirmed change to this page as it’s announced.

Frequently asked questions

What are the latest Google Ads updates in 2026?

The latest Google Ads updates are the September 2026 AI Max auto-upgrade, the 17 August bidding change for budget-limited campaigns, the removal of Search language targeting, the Display-to-Demand Gen migration, and new AI Mode ad formats announced at Google Marketing Live 2026.

When do Dynamic Search Ads upgrade to AI Max?

The full Dynamic Search Ads sunset begins in February 2027. Campaign-level broad match and Automatically Created Assets campaigns upgrade earlier, between 1 and 30 September 2026.

Can I opt out of the AI Max upgrade?

Yes, feature by feature, in campaign settings. The practical deadline is the start of the migration window, so check your campaigns before the upgrade reaches them.

Why did my Google Ads CPA increase in August 2026?

If your campaign was “Limited by budget” and beating its Target CPA, Google now bids closer to the target you set. Lower the target to match the CPA you actually want to pay.

Is the Google Display Network going away?

No. The inventory stays available. You buy it through Demand Gen campaigns instead of standalone Display campaigns, and you can still run Display-only activity there.

Is language targeting still available in Google Ads?

Not for Search. From late September 2026, Search and AI Max for Search campaigns match on the language of your ads. Performance Max still uses the setting on YouTube, Display, Discover and Gmail.

What is Ask Advisor in Google Ads?
